Carbon Reduction Plan

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

Midland Fire Security Services Ltd (MFSS) is committed to helping Nottingham City Council to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2028.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions. Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction during the contract can be measured.

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations.

The company has been actively looking to accurately measure and report the CO2 emissions from business activities since 2021, at that point we commenced looking at ways to reduce our impact. Procedures have since been streamlined so we are more able to access the data, this being the most significant blocker to accurate measurements.

For 2026 there will be a significant reduction in our emissions, this is detailed later in the report, as we moved to new premises in January 2026. Up to this point, the premises were rented therefore limiting the ability to make significant improvements.

Baseline year emissions:

Year Fleet Fuel (kg CO₂) Electricity (kg CO₂) Supplier (kg CO₂) Total (kg CO₂)
2023 103,816 4,034 93.6 107,943.6
2024 119,593 5,035 93.6 124,721.6

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to helping Nottingham City Council achieve Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.
We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the life of the contract to zero tCO2e by 2028.
This is a reduction of 100% over the life of the contract for scope 1&2.

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2025 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 31.17 tCO2e, a 75%ge reduction against the 2025 baseline and the measures will be in effect when performing the contract.

In line with current government guidelines, and best practice and as a responsible company, we have put into place several actions to reduce our CO2 emissions, these form part of our quality targets for 2026 (above), and are agreed by the Directors:

  • Continue to monitor or waste stream, our waste provider portal shows CO2 savings made by diverting from landfill per year which we use as offsetting against emissions.
  • Zero reportable environmental incidents, maintain high standards regarding environmental measures and controls.
  • Continue to use the minibus for large sites, rather than several vans.
  • All Directors and project managers cars are now EV only, with a charger installed at the office, further consideration to be given to use of EV vans for more local sites.
  • The move to a new office in 2026, this has been a target for some years, the office was renovated before moving in so additional measures could be in place, to include:
    1. Four EV chargers on site for staff vehicles, visitors etc
    2. Solar panels on the roof, this is a 35.6Kw array, which is expected to produce most of the electricity that will be used for the office.
    3. A 35.6Kw array, on average for the Midlands, would save 5.2 tonnes of CO2 per year, thereby reducing emissions from the start of 2026.
    4. LED lighting throughout the new premises, this being more efficient with less maintenance costs. All lighting is on sensors so turned off if no movement detected.
    5. “Lill switch” at the exit, the last person to leave each night is to turn this off, which turns off all non-essential items such as screens & monitors.
    6. New energy and fuel card provider, both with clearer and immediate detailed reports to enable accurate CO2 information
    7. Various waste streams, in line with guidance, to include food etc.
    8. The waste report for 2025 details all waste is diverted from landfill and therefore saves 38 tonnes of CO2.
    9. Use of Shell hub to check monthly CO2 emissions
  • Maintain our SGB accreditation for 2026, this provides useful advice and support to help improve our environmental procedures and credentials.
  • Ensure batteries are correctly stores and recycled, these are our only WEEE waste stream, the move has allowed better streaming of the waste.
  • Further consider how to effectively measure scope 2 & 3 for future reporting

In the future we hope to implement further measures such as:

Purchase, or lease electric vehicles for site services, local contracts and PPM would support the use of EV, the head office has four charging points already in place for these vehicles.

Consider further contributions to the existing Carbon offset scheme, once the 2026 emissions have been established, this type of scheme can help the company to completely offset our emissions.

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been completed in accordance with the guidance and reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans.

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard1 and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting2.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3).

In 2026 we have started to issue to certain suppliers of carbon emission questionnaire, to establish the measures taken by our supply chain.

This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and signed off by the board of directors (or equivalent management body).
