Being part of a community means more than simply operating within it.
Over the years, Midland Fire has supported local charities, community organisations, grassroots sports clubs and young people through sponsorship, fundraising, volunteering, apprenticeships and the use of our own professional skills and services.
Our roots are firmly in Burton upon Trent, and much of our community activity has naturally developed around Burton and the surrounding area. As the business has grown, we have also had opportunities to support organisations further afield.
From sponsoring junior sports teams and providing essential fire safety services free of charge, to giving apprentices the opportunity to volunteer their skills, we try to support local organisations in practical ways that can make a genuine difference.
Based on our current sponsorships, donated services, staff time and wider community activities, we estimate that Midland Fire has contributed more than £10,000 in support to our local community to date.
Our contributions take many forms, including direct sponsorship, fundraising, volunteering, donated equipment, and free or discounted fire and security services. We also give our engineers and apprentices opportunities to use their time and skills to support local organisations.
For us, social value is about more than financial donations. In many cases, the most valuable support we can provide comes from using the skills, time and experience already available within our business to help local organisations in practical ways.

We are proud to have supported Burton Albion Community Trust and the work it carries out across Burton upon Trent and the surrounding area.
Our involvement has included taking part in charity fundraising events such as the Charity Golf League, as well as supporting Easter egg donations for local families.
Members of the Midland Fire team have also participated in community fundraising activities connected with the Trust, giving our staff the opportunity to get involved directly with local causes.
The relationship is a great example of how local businesses and community organisations can work together to support people across the area.

By using the expertise already available within our business, we’re able to help the club reduce some of its ongoing costs while helping maintain a safe environment for everyone who uses its facilities.

Scropton
Scropton Riding Centre provides riding opportunities and support for people with disabilities and additional needs.
Midland Fire has supported the centre by providing discounted fire alarm maintenance, helping to reduce some of the ongoing costs associated with maintaining its facilities.
Members of our team have also taken part in a dedicated volunteering day at the centre.
Rather than simply providing financial support, our staff spent the day helping with practical work around the site.
This type of volunteering gives our employees an opportunity to step away from their usual day-to-day roles and contribute directly to an organisation within the local community.

Burton HOPE carries out important work supporting people within the local community.
Midland Fire has helped the organisation by providing maintenance services to its building free of charge.
Providing our professional services in this way allows the charity to avoid some of the costs it would otherwise incur maintaining its fire safety systems.
Our team has also helped raise money for Burton HOPE through company social and fundraising events.

We are proud to support SARAC through fundraising, staff involvement and an ongoing relationship with the charity.
Our team has spent time helping to organise activities, purchasing items for charity hampers and raising money to support the important work SARAC carries out within the local community.
Working with SARAC has also given members of our team access to valuable training and support. Our Office Manager, Charlotte, has since become a SARAC Ambassador, allowing her to get more involved with the charity and help support the important work they do in the local community.
This growing partnership reflects our commitment to supporting organisations that make a positive difference within our local community.

Supporting the community also gives us an opportunity to involve the next generation of Midland Fire engineers.
Five of our apprentices spent a day at Trent Rowing Club replacing emergency lighting around the club’s facilities.
The project allowed the rowing club to benefit from the skills and resources available within our business while giving our apprentices valuable hands-on experience outside their usual working environment.
It’s exactly the kind of project where community support and employee development can work side by side.
Circus Starr is a circus for children and families that have found it difficult to attend in the past. It is aimed at children with disabilities, families on low incomes and those facing challenges such as domestic violence, bereavement or who may be living with a life-limiting condition.
Midland Fire are proud to have donated funding to Circus Starr so that children and families can attend free of charge.

Grassroots sports clubs are often run by volunteers and rely heavily on the support of local businesses and their surrounding communities.
Alongside our partnerships with Burton Albion and Burton Rugby Club, Midland Fire has supported a number of other local sports teams and clubs.

Across these clubs, support has included a combination of sports kit sponsorship, advertising boards and fire safety services.
Providing equipment such as defibs is another example of how our community support can take different forms depending on what an organisation needs. Supporting clubs with important equipment can provide a lasting benefit to players, volunteers and visitors using their facilities.
Supporting our community also means creating opportunities for young people to learn, develop and begin their careers.
We are committed to helping young people build a career within the fire, security and electrical industries. Each year, we welcome 3–4 apprentices and students into the business, giving them the chance to learn from experienced professionals while working towards recognised industry qualifications.
We work closely with Burton College, Derby College and Burton Training Organisation (BTOL) Ltd to provide a combination of practical workplace learning and classroom-based training. Apprentices receive block release for college and training, allowing them to develop the technical knowledge and hands-on skills needed for their chosen career.
We also offer opportunities to students completing T Levels and other placements. Alanis joined Midland Fire as a T Level student however after impressing the team with her attitude and the quality of her work, she was offered the opportunity to continue with us as an apprentice and is now developing her skills further as part of the Midland Fire team.
We believe that giving young people the chance to demonstrate their ability can open the door to long-term careers. When someone shows commitment, enthusiasm and potential, we are keen to support their development within the business.
Our apprentices receive a fair “earn while you learn” salary throughout their training, with the opportunity to progress into a full-time role following the successful completion of their apprenticeship.
Alongside our apprenticeship programme, we work with local colleges and training providers to give students a better understanding of the careers available within fire, security, electrical and life-safety services.
Our team takes part in careers events, presentations and other activities designed to introduce students to the different roles within the sector and explain the routes available after leaving education.
Members of the Midland Fire team have, for example, delivered careers presentations at Derby College, giving students an insight into Life Safety and Electrical apprenticeships, the skills involved and what a career within the industry can look like.
We also believe in recognising the progress and achievements of our apprentices as they develop their skills.
Our apprentices have been entered into SkillELECTRIC, the electrical industry’s leading skills competition, which celebrates practical ability and technical knowledge among talented electricians from across the UK.
Midland Fire apprentice Joe Wilcock was entered into the SkillELECTRIC 2023 competition, giving him the opportunity to put his skills to the test and represent Midland Fire within the industry.
‘Noel-Baker Academy believes all our students are entitled to experience a workplace and that this gives them an excellent taste of their next steps towards the best of their future options.’
Our work experience placements give GCSE students an early introduction to the workplace and the chance to see how a professional fire, security and electrical business operates day to day.
We have worked with local schools, including Noel-Baker Academy in Derby and Burton Community College, to welcome students into the business and help them gain a clearer understanding of working life and the range of careers available to them.

Our Approach to Social Value
For us, social value is about making a positive contribution wherever we can, contribution won’t always look the same.
Sometimes it’s sponsoring a junior sports team. Sometimes it’s an engineer providing a service that would otherwise cost a charity money. Sometimes it’s five apprentices spending a day improving the emergency lighting at a sports club. And sometimes it’s simply members of our team giving their time to help with a fundraising event.
Together, these activities represent Midland Fire’s ongoing involvement with the organisations and people that make up our communities.
