PSTN switch off solutions for emergency life safety systems

On 31 December 2025, the UK will fully transition its telephone networks from analogue to digital. This will impact the emergency safety systems of many businesses, namely those which rely on copper phone lines to communicate an alarm being raised. At the end of 2025, these systems will no longer be supported.

At Midland Fire, we can help you identify and replace your PSTN products which will cease to function following the switch-off, ensuring you maintain a robust and reliable fire and security system long into the future.

We cover all industrial, commercial and public sectors. Services are available throughout the UK.

Get your business ready for the switchover

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) has been the global telecommunication choice for over a century, relying on copper wire and TDM to maintain dedicated connections during calls. The goal of the digital switchover is to replace this outdated and costly-to-maintain legacy telephone infrastructure with more efficient, versatile and cost-effective technology nationwide.

Emergency call services, alarm systems and other critical safety infrastructure rely heavily on telecommunication systems, and so will be affected by the switch. Products include CCTV, emergency call points and intruder alarms which communicate to signal monitoring centres.

How can Midland Fire help?

We will conduct a thorough assessment of your premises to identify any fire and security technology that will become obsolete following the 2025 PSTN switch off. We will then present the best solutions on how to upgrade your systems and install new IP-supported products to best suit your company’s needs.

BT Redcare PSTN upgrades

BT Redcare is one of the alarm signalling services using PSTN lines which will require upgrade in preparation for the switchover. Midland Fire recommends replacing Redcare with call points from CSL, the UK’s leading critical connectivity provider, who are pioneering the transition from wired to wireless connectivity.

    PSTN Switchover FAQs

The digital switchover has already begun, so now is the time to review your communication technology and plan for the future. Any technology your business uses which is powered by PSTN will become obsolete at the end of 2025, which is likely to include elements of your safety systems. These will need to be replaced by IP-enabled devices.

A switch to a digital network may mean initial investment in new technologies and infrastructure, but long-term benefits include lower operating costs, faster and more reliable communication capabilities, and easier integration with other digital services.

Systems which may need updating include:

    Emergency call points:

Modern call points will use 4G as a reliable replacement for copper connections. They are easier to install, more reliable in an emergency, and mobile call points can be battery powered.

    Fire alarm systems:

These systems must be adapted to use IP communication technology for monitoring and alerting, requiring new hardware or modifications.

    Intruder and security alarms:

These also require upgrades to support IP communication for continued reliability and a quick response to security breaches.

    Disabled refuge systems:

Continued communication between refuge areas and the personnel in control of evacuation is crucial, providing reassurance and safety updates.

    Remote monitoring services:

Transition to IP networks may require new sensors and communication devices to maintain continuous monitoring.
