Thorlux Lighting Upgrades & Maintenance: Transitioning from Fluorescent Lighting as Phase-Out Begins

1st September 2023 marked the phase-out of T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes to make room for LED lighting. For Thorlux, this means that their original Scanlight AT system is no longer supported in favour of their latest emergency lighting system, SmartScan.

    Aston University – Life Safety Framework Provider – Birmingham
    Initially awarded in 2019 – Midland Fire is the Life Safety Framework provider for the next 3 to 5 years at Aston University.

    Emergency lighting service and maintenance is included. Midland fire will conducting 3hr discharge and monthly flick tests including a mixture of self-contained battery backup and central battery systems.

    Your fluoresent lighting upgrade and thorlux lighting questions answered

    T5 and T8 systems refer to types of fluorescent lighting:

    • T5: a thin fluorescent tube, ⅝ of an inch in diameter, known for high efficiency and brightness.
    • T8: a slightly thicker tube, 1 inch in diameter, balancing efficiency and cost.

    Both can be found in a range of domestic, commercial and industrial settings, such as schools, factories, hospitals and car parks.

    Thorlux Scanlight AT primarily uses T5 fluorescent lights due to their slim profile and stronger light output and efficiency compared to T8 tubes.

    The phasing out of T5 and T8 fluorescent systems in favour of LED lighting is driven by the superior energy efficiency, longer lifespan, better environmental performance and market demand for more advanced lighting solutions.

    SmartScan is our recommended choice for upgrading to an LED emergency lighting system. The newest offering from Thorlux, it’s a revolutionary wireless lighting management system that utilises LED technology to enhance energy efficiency and maximise cost savings.

    A switch from fluorescent to LED lighting will increase your energy efficiency and reduce your carbon footprint. LED lights also need less maintenance and have a longer lifespan, ultimately saving your business money in the long run.

    Unfortunately, Scanlight and SmartScan are not compatible. In theory, if one component shows as faulty and needs replacing, an entire upgrade to SmartScan is required, costing unplanned money and time. We have worked a way around this, providing maintenance for your existing system so that an upgrade is only needed when you choose.

    While being a cost-effective solution in the long term, initial upgrade to SmartScan is a costly process. By maintaining your existing Scanlight system, we can save you thousands in upgrade costs and delay your upgrade for several years.
