Midland Fire is working with Make it Wild
Protecting people and property has always been our priority.
From January 2026, we are proud to extend that commitment to protecting the environment. We have formally committed to annually offsetting 24 tonnes of CO₂ through tree planting in partnership with Make It Wild.
What Our Commitment Means
Our CO₂ offsetting programme commenced in January 2026. We are committed to offsetting 24 tonnes of CO₂ each year, achieved through planting seven trees per year located at Rowan Tree Farm Reserve in Derbyshire.
This is not a one-off planting exercise. It represents an ongoing annual environmental commitment, supporting long-term carbon capture and biodiversity recovery here in the UK.
What Is Make It Wild?
Make It Wild is a UK-based rewilding organisation dedicated to restoring native habitats, planting trees, enhancing biodiversity and capturing carbon naturally.
At Rowan Tree Farm Reserve in Derbyshire, tree planting forms part of a wider rewilding approach, allowing the land to move towards a self-sustaining natural ecosystem.
From the moment trees are planted and mowing or intensive grazing ceases, nature begins to recover. Grasses grow longer and native plant species begin to re-establish. This creates habitat for small mammals such as mice and voles, which in turn attract birds of prey including barn owls and other raptors.
As the trees mature, their environmental impact continues to grow:
- Leaves absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen
- Canopies create shade and local cooling, forming micro-climates for wildlife
- Fruits and seeds provide food for birds and mammals
- Fallen leaves decompose into carbon-rich organic matter, improving soil health
- Roots stabilise soil, reduce erosion and help manage surface water
- Woodland areas slow rainfall runoff, contributing to natural flood mitigation
