Keeping the St Ralph Sherwin Trust safe with ongoing electrical works and maintenance
Maintenance is key when working with any type of electrical installation. That’s why we have ongoing partnerships with many of our clients, making sure their sites and equipment are always up to spec – just like we do for the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust.
For several years, our team at Midland Fire have been supporting the St Ralph Sherwin Trust in the delivery of continual maintenance and improvements of their electrical infrastructure. The Trust is made up of several schools across the East Midlands, and we work hard to make sure that we keep every site (and every pupil) safe from the risk of electrical faults and the fires that could start as a result.
The work we carry out on a regular basis includes reacting to electrical callouts and fault finding as well as repairs and scheduled maintenance. Jobs like this are very important to us at Midland Fire as looking after our community is at the heart of what we do, and we’re proud to be able to help protect the next generation of young people in our local area.
“The working relationship we have with St Ralph Sherwin Trust is great as we know we’re doing our part to help protect the schools in our community. Our engineers visit their sites regularly to keep the electrics maintained and we’re always on call if there are any signs of an emergency.”
Rob Taylor, Midland Fire Electrical Division Manager
St Ralph Sherwin Trust
St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust is a family of 25 academies based across the East Midlands. They currently look after 20 primary schools and 5 secondary schools, with a total of nearly 7,900 pupils studying under the Trust. Their goal is to create a learning community in which every young person has the chance to flourish, and they’re dedicated to preserving and developing the highest quality of Catholic education in the local area.
In terms of learning spaces, the Trust’s schools vary widely in size and age, ranging from historic buildings to modern campuses, with different facilities and equipment used in each one. These facilities include specialist labs, libraries, prayer rooms, art studios, sports halls and ICT suites, and this variety of spaces is always an important consideration for our team when planning and carrying out the appropriate electrical works for the Trust.
Planned and reactive electrical small works for St Ralph Sherwin
What we do for the Trust
At Midland Fire Security Services, we’re currently in partnership with the St Ralph Sherwin Trust to provide maintenance and improvements to the electrical equipment across all their schools. Some of the work we do for them is planned, with the aim of preventing any problems and keeping all their equipment working correctly. We also carry out reactive works in the event of a fault or any kind of electrical emergency.
As a NICEIC-approved contractor, our electricians are trained to the latest version of the IET Wiring regulations, and we use the latest standards in electrical testing equipment across all of our services to make sure our client’s installations meet their legal obligations as employers.
One of the Trust’s priorities is to improve their energy efficiency, so our team continually provides energy-saving solutions too. For example, our engineers make sure they use the latest LED technology, to cut the Trust’s costs and also their carbon footprint.
Here are some of the services we provide for the Trust:
- Emergency callouts
- Fault finding
- Repairs and remedial works
- Wiring and rewiring
- Power efficiency and management
- Issuing Electrical Inspection Condition Reports (EICR)
Working in school environments
As the majority of the work we do for St Ralph Sherwin takes place on live school sites, we make sure we always work with the utmost professionalism. Our engineers are all DBS checked, and we carefully plan and coordinate all projects to minimise disruption to the students and staff.
Collaboration and clear communication with school leaders is key to making sure these essential works are completed safely and efficiently with the least possible impact on the school day and the learning environment, which is something we consistently do successfully.

The importance of maintenance
Building owners and employers have a legal responsibility to make sure that all their electrical installations are safe enough to be on site and for staff to operate. Keeping all equipment properly maintained is therefore crucial. This minimises the risk of fire and injury and helps businesses avoid fines and invalidated insurance too.
Part of the service we offer to St Ralph Sherwin is the issuing of EICRs – Electrical Inspection Condition Reports. Our team carries out wire testing services to test and commission their electrical installations and we issue an EICR on completion.
Having a satisfactory EICR report means that they’re compliant with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. If ever there was an emergency situation at any of their schools, their business insurance will expect them to have an up-to-date EICR.
