Aston University Library Lighting Retrofit: A Sustainable Solution by Midland Fire
At Midland Fire Security Services, we are committed to sustainable, efficient solutions tailored to meet the demands of busy environments like educational institutions. Our recent lighting retrofit project at Aston University Library, in partnership with Thorlux Lighting uk, exemplifies this commitment. By upgrading the library’s lighting system, we were able to significantly reduce environmental impact and operational costs while supporting Aston University’s ambitious sustainability goals.
Overview
Aston University, located in central Birmingham, is renowned for its academic excellence and was awarded “University of the Year for Student Success 2024.” The four-storey library serves over 15,000 students each year and is open 12 hours daily during term time, with extended access during exams. As one of the busiest facilities on campus, the library required an upgraded lighting system that could support high usage while offering energy savings and reduced maintenance.
The Challenge
The library’s existing lighting, a legacy fluorescent system, had provided reliable service but was due for an upgrade to meet modern efficiency standards. Aston University wanted a sustainable and cost-effective approach that would reduce both energy usage and maintenance demands without requiring a complete lighting overhaul. This is where Midland Fire’s expertise in retrofitting came into play.
The Solution
Collaborating with Thorlux Lighting, Midland Fire implemented an upgrade to 657 luminaires using Thorlux Light Line Retrofit kits. By retaining the original lighting infrastructure and installing advanced LED technology with SmartScan controls, we minimised waste and maximise efficiency. Our team removed outdated components and integrated the retrofit kits directly into the existing luminaires, allowing the university to avoid the financial and environmental costs of a full replacement.
Results
This retrofit solution has delivered Aston University significant sustainability and operational benefits:
- 45% Reduction in Energy Usage: The lighting system’s energy consumption has nearly halved.
- Reduced Carbon Emissions: Each retrofitted luminaire prevents 127 kgCO₂e, aligning with Aston’s sustainability initiatives.
- Lower Maintenance Costs: Maintenance expenses have decreased by 86%, thanks to the reliability and longevity of the new LEDs and SmartScan control system.
